Bret Harte was an influential American author and poet who is best known for his depiction of California during the Gold Rush era. Born in Albany, New York in 1836, Harte moved to California in 1854 during the height of the Gold Rush. It was during his time in California that Harte drew inspiration for much of his writing, as he experienced the excitement, lawlessness, and hardships of the Gold Rush firsthand.

Harte’s most famous work, “The Luck of Roaring Camp,” was published in 1868 and is set in a California mining town. The story is a poignant portrayal of life in the Wild West, focusing on the lives of the rough and tough miners and their struggles to make a living in the harsh conditions of the gold fields.
