Aztalan is a historic site located in southeastern Wisconsin, near the town of Lake Mills. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in the state and is known for its large platform mounds and village layout. The site is believed to have been inhabited by a Native American culture known as the Mississippian people, who lived in the area from around 1000 to 1300 CE.

The most striking feature of Aztalan is the three large platform mounds, which are thought to have served as ceremonial and political centers for the village. The largest of these mounds is known as the “east mound,” and it rises to a height of 20 feet. These mounds would have been the focal point of the village, and likely would have been used for religious ceremonies, gatherings, and possibly the residences of the elite members of the community.

In addition to the platform mounds, Aztalan also features a stockade that once surrounded the village. The stockade was made of tall wooden posts and would have served as a defensive fortification for the inhabitants. Today, Aztalan is an important archaeological site and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The site is open to the public and is managed by the Wisconsin Historical Society. Visitors can explore the mounds, stockade, and other features of the site, and learn about the history of the Mississippian people who once lived there.
